Disaster can strike at any moment, but being prepared in the event of an emergency can make it easier to put your life back together. Many families do not have emergency preparedness plans that can help eliminate the feeling of confusion and complete loss and can help save lives. An emergency plan for your family should be created, discussed and practiced several times to ensure everyone knows their role.

As we gather as a nation to commemorate the passing of a decade since the largest terrorist attack on American soil, I’d like to send my condolences and prayers to the families of the 2,977 victims who lost their lives that day. While we faced grief and fear on that tragic day, we also joined together in a common unity despite age, race, gender or religion.

To the emergency responders, police officers, fire fighters and all who volunteered in the following days of the attack, we thank you. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you for your dedication to serve in the wake of tragedy. When many of us broke down, you stayed strong. Thank you.

Although 10 years have passed, the images from that day will forever be burned into our memories. While we will not forget the frightful images, we must also remember the message that our country sent to the world that day: We will continue to grow and prosper. We will prevail, survive, and remain free. We are proud to be American.
