State Sen. Mattie Hunter saw another major victory for public health when her proposal creating the Diabetes Awareness Special License Plate passed the Illinois Senate.
“Every year, about 3.2 million deaths are attributed to diabetes complications,” Hunter said. “Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in the nation, and we must get serious about making sure citizens are educated and aware regarding this chronic disease that continues plaguing our communities.”
Hunter is a founding member of the Illinois Diabetes Legislative Caucus and has been a leader on this important issue during her tenure in the General Assembly. For example, she previously championed legislation outlining the rights and care available to students with diabetes.
“I am happy to have joined forces with my House colleagues on both sides of the aisle to carry solid bipartisan legislation that’s going to provide much needed funding to support Diabetes Awareness,” Hunter added.
House Bill 1815 creates the Diabetes Awareness special license plate. The proceeds from sales and renewals of the license plates will fund grants for diabetes research.
The legislation now advances to the governor.
