CHICAGO — Libraries and literacy programs within the 3rd District will receive more than $2.6 million in combined state grants, thanks to the support of State Senator Mattie Hunter.
“Our library system and local literacy programs are valuable community resources,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “This funding will help expand these essential services, unlocking opportunities for personal and economic growth.”
The latest round of funding from Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias includes nearly $22 million for library services and $6 million to support literacy programs throughout the state.
Within Hunter’s district, the Chicago Public Library System will receive $2,573,253 to support library services, such as online catalogs, day-to-day operations and interlibrary loan programs. The Literacy Volunteers of Illinois will see $53,800 for their adult literacy program to assist learners in enhancing their reading, writing, math and English-language skills.
“Equipping our libraries with the resources they need to increase services and expand offerings is essential to enhancing the accessibility of learning materials for all Illinois residents regardless of their geographic location, accessibility needs, income status or educational level,” said Giannoulias. “Meanwhile, increasing the state’s literacy level results in opportunities for individual success and makes communities stronger.”
